Hear music from bowed string ensembles Sybarite5, Turtle Island Quartet, and violist/composer Jessica Pavone’s string ensemble which pays tribute to women-made inventions.
There’s music from violist/composer Jessica Pavone from her 2023 release Clamor, a tribute to women-made inventions, like bloomers invented by Amelia Bloomer, Nu Shu, a secret language developed by Chinese women to communicate without going to school, and the “Neolttwigi”, the 17th-century see-saw, invented by Korean women so that they could see beyond the confines of the properties they lived in. Hear “Neolttwigi”, as played by Pavone on viola, violinists Aimée Niemann and Charlotte Munn-Wood, violist Abby Swidler, cellist Mariel Roberts, and double bassist Shayna Dulberger, (“likely not coincidentally, all women and nonbinary musicians,” -Pop Matters.)
Then string quintet Sybarite5 plays an arrangement of music by Punch Brothers, from their 2023 album, Collective Wisdom. Newly reformed out of the pandemic, the quintet’s latest collection of music features improvisations, electronics, and world premiere commissions. Also, hear music from a collaboration between the Jasper and Jupiter Quartets and their recording of American composer Dan Visconti's "Eternal Breath". The work was commissioned by family of members of the Jasper and Jupiter Quartets, and builds on themes of friendship, family, and joy.
